Brahmacharya Benefits

Brahmacharya (Semen Retention) is one of the important components of 'Yama' (ethical discipline). Fundamentally, Brahmacharya refers to celibacy.

'Brahmacharya' means - "To surrender one's Ego and go with the will of the Almighty."

The Benefits of Brahmacharya:

"By the practice of Brahmacharya, longevity, luster, strength, vigor, knowledge, beauty, fame, piety, and devotion to truth increase." (-Cited from Practice of Brahmacharya by Shivananda Swami; original source unknown.)

Practice of Brahmacharya gives good health, inner strength, peace of mind, resilience, and long life. It helps to preserve physical and mental energy. It enhances memory, willpower, clear thinking, focus, and ability to understand philosophical subjects. It gives physical strength, vitality, courage, boldness, and strength of character. To one who practices brahmacharya (spiritual discipline of celibacy), divine knowledge comes naturally. Their words carry meaning and authority, leaving an impression on listeners.

On the other hand, those who do not practice Brahmacharya often remain in confusion. Srila Prabhupada states: "Brahmacharya is very essential. When one becomes averse to sex life, that is the beginning of spiritual life."

"Without becoming Brahmachari (celibate student), nobody can understand spiritual life."

"The vow of Brahmacharya means completely avoiding sex in work, words, and mind—at all times, under all circumstances and in all places."
